We were flying to Miami, with a transfer in Washington before continuing to Miami. The problem was the plane that was taking us to Washington was coming from Washington where it was snowing much harder and where all flights were canceled. Our 10 a.m. departure found us still at LaGuardia at 3p.m. American Airlines finally decided that the only way for us to get to Miami was to go to Chicago and then to Miami from there. While flying over Ohio, one of the two engines stopped functioning. Flying on one engine required us to make an emergency landing in Cleveland. They took us through emergency landing procedures and many people were becoming nervous.

At one point while driving to one of the high points in the park at an over 8000-foot elevation, we entered into the open area of the parking lot with an unobstructed view of what nature had prepared for our enjoyment. What our eyes beheld was so stunning, all of us in the car said simultaneously, “Oh, my God!” It was truly incredible because our 16 year old had so far not been easily impressed with nature’s show.

We were only two minutes from their house when we found this narrow road blocked by 8-10 cows. They had gotten out of their grazing field and were trying to figure out what to do next. Our problem was how to get them to move out of our way. I started inching the car toward them while occasionally blowing the car horn. I was hoping for the best, which surprisingly came rather quickly. I was keeping to the left side of the road and they moved to the right side, single file. I was very relieved since I had visions of us being stuck there for quite a while. Our relief was short lived however, for just a few hundred feet ahead around a bend, we met the rest of the herd consisting of 15-20 more cows. Joan was becoming very concerned about being sandwiched between all these cattle with no way out except passing them. My previous tactics didn’t work this time. The cows were becoming nervous, because we were apparently too close for their comfort and my honking of the horn was an irritant, which I quickly stopped.

As I hurried towards my car to question the man, still writing out the ticket, I looked again. I saw no meters. When I questioned him, he just pointed towards the building about 12 feet away. I couldn’t believe it. They put the meters next to the buildings instead of next to the curb, as in this country. I never saw the meters. I asked him why they put the meters so far from where the cars are parked. I don’t know if he was being a smart ass with the answer he gave me or if it’s the truth. “To give more tickets to Americans,” he answered.

We were the last in a row of parked cars putting us at the intersection of two main streets. We returned after two hours to deposit more coins into the meter. Joan decided to leave her pocketbook in the trunk at this time. Upon completing our visit an hour later as we walked towards our car I mentioned to Joan, “There’s our car,” and my mouth fell open with shock. From several hundred feet away I saw that the trunk was wide open.
